The Raiders were the 8th Charter Member of the American Football League where they won one Championship. The franchise joined the NFL in 1970 with the rest of the AFL and was placed in the AFC West.
Al Davis, a former San Diego Chargers assistant coach, was hired on as the GM and Head Coach in 1962, winning the AFL Coach of the Year in 1963. With his early success, Davis then became the AFL Commissioner in 1966 but returned to the raiders in July of 1966 as a part owner and Head of Football Operations.
The Raiders have won one AFL Championship and three Super Bowl Championships. They have been Conference Champions four times and Division Champions 15 times. The franchise has made twenty-one playoff appearances in forty-nine years.
Past Seasons
Two months into a dismal 5-11 2008 season, the Oakland Raiders franchise parted ways with Lane Kiffin who, after one and half seasons compiled a 5-20 record, was fired and replaced with Offensive Coordinator Tom Cable on an interim basis. Cable officially became the Head Coach of the Raiders on February 4, 2009.
In the 2009 draft, the franchise filled its needs with six picks that the team feels could make an impact on the team sooner than later. Picks include Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey who the team feels is already NFL ready, Ohio Safety Mike Mitchell, and Matt Shaughnessy, a DE out of the University of Wisconsin.
Look for third year journeyman QB Jamarcus Russell to have a breakout year with his new No. 1 receiver rookie Darrius Heyward-Bey and second year WR Chaz Schilens opening up the offense for RB Darren McFadden.
